So I bought the Street Sweeper Social Club album which is Riley Boots and Tom Morello. I’m glad I did, but holy shit I wasn’t quite ready for it.
The stories being told I are not for me to enjoy, they’re meant to wound. Which is what makes this album very, very good. Riley Boots ripped my ass a new one and this album is thirteen years old.
So what is the point of this post? It’s sure as hell not for my friends of color, there isn’t a single word written they aren’t familiar with in their own way. It’s for the people in my life who look like me. At the very least you need to read what this man has written, because there are no lies here.
If it doesn’t make you question they way we allow our culture to treat others and operate the world…honestly, I’m not sure why you’re on my friend’s list to see this. Because quite frankly, I don’t want people in my life who read or listen to these words who don’t get at least a little pissed at themselves and massively pissed at the systems that make it necessary for another human being to write the words in this album.
If you’re about to comment, “but I’m not like that!” Yeah, okay…I don’t care. It’s not about you as an individual it’s about systems you benefit from. Because every bit of crying you want to do about how hard you have/had it…is still easier than others have had it just because their skin is darker than yours. Our failure as individuals and a group to deal with this is unacceptable.
Anyhow, I’m gonna shut up now. Because it’s not about me. The link you need is below.
